Caramel Apples

For my baby shower this past weekend I decided to chip in and make some deluxe caramel apples for take aways. Unfortunately things were so crazy busy around here that we never got a chance to take photos of the finished product. :( For a first attempt I think they turned out pretty fabulous. Here is the recipe I used so you can try them out at home for yourself..a delicious fall treat that is also fun for the kids to get in on.

DELUXE CARAMEL APPLES -

You will need -
About 12-15 apples (we used Empire apples, my favorite)
Wooden sticks, 1 for each apple (you can get creative here and use anything from cleaned sticks collected in your own backyard or local forest, chop sticks or bamboo skewers broken down to a suitable size, popsicle sticks..you get the idea)
100 caramels
6 tbsp. evaporated milk

1. Wash and dry apples and remove stems. Skewer the apples onto the sticks.
2. Prepare your work surface. Have wax paper lined cookie sheets on standby..spraying the sheets with some Pam is also a big help when removing the sticky apples later on. Ensure plates with any garnishments are set up and ready for dipping. I used candy sprinkles but you can also use chopped nuts, oreo cookie crumbs or whatever else you can come up with.
3. Place the caramels and evaporated milk in a medium sized microwavable bowl. Microwave on high power for 2 and a half to 3 minutes until caramels are thoroughly melted. Mix well.
4. Plunge the apples into the syrup and twist to coat evenly. Let excess caramel sauce drip off or scrape away with a spoon from the bottom. Roll apple in garnishments and place on prepared cookie sheet.
5. Place apples in refrigerator for 2 hours.
6. Apples can be wrapped in cellophane and tied with a ribbon for a pretty finished product. I used basket wrap cut to size with some brown and pink fabric ribbon purchased at my local fabric store.

Great for a special event or for a rainy day activity with the little ones. Enjoy.
